physical planet bodies orbit our local star, the sun. as viewed from earth, they can be combust when they are:

(1) either between earth and the sun. and further, earth, the said planet and the sun are almost in a line. a case in example was, as viewed from earth, mercury passing over the disk of the sun on 9th november, 2006

(2) or go behind the sun, as viewed from earth, and get occulted by the sun's disk

sun as centre, if we draw concentric circles of each planet's orbit, as viewed from earth, only two planets can be candidates fulfiling both above criteria for combustion/ occultation, as their arbits pass between the earth and the sun

moon can fulfil criterion (1) only, as it is a satelite of the planet earth and orbits around it. so it's orbit is relatively so small that it can never be behind the disk of the sun, as viewed from earth. but it would fulful criterion (2) also, and be occulted by the sun, if viewed from mars or jupiter or saturn. but then, we view everything from earth

all other planets have orbits larger than the earth's, from where we can view them. hence, they can fulfil criterion (2) only. they can be only occulted by the sun

sun's planets having orbits smaller than earth's move faster than earth around the sun. all planets circle around the sun in the same direction keeping the sun on the left, if we were to look down upon our solar system from the pole star i.e from side of the zodiac. we would then see all planets orbiting in a anti-clockwise direction. when they are just on the same side of sun on which earth is, they would, moving faster than earth, try to catch up with the position of earth and overtake it in direct motion. but as soon as they 'turn the corner' ahead of earth and go to the other side of the sun, viewed from earth, they would seem to be coming back. though they continue to 'really' move in the same direction, they 'apparently' are in retrograde motion. sun's both these smaller orbit planets can get occulted behind the sun, when in retrograde motion

for outer planets, situation is reversed. when earth and any of these three planets are on opposing sides of the sun, as viewed from earth, the planet would appear to move in its natural direction. as earth moves faster in its orbit around the sun than mars, jupiter or saturn in theirs', as soon as it would come on the same side of sun as the planet is, it would start to catch up with it. as we can not feel the 30 kms per second speed of earth around sun and it seems to us as stationary, the planet it is chasing seems to start to come back towards it in opposite direction of its natural motion. because the retrogression of planets having orbits superior to earth can take place only when they are on the same side of sun, they can fulfil only criteria (2) for combustion i.e they can be occulted only. and that can happen while they are in direct mition

hence, only inferior planets can be combust, when retrograde
